Classic process capture and modelling tools.

The tools in this category draw, store and govern process models. Most of them have been doing so for a long time, many now add AI assistants, and all of them are places a diagram can live after it has been captured. This page lists what each vendor publishes about its own product and where patchley sits next to them: upstream, as the capture, with a file hand-over into any of them that reads BPMN 2.0 XML.

The category

Modelling tools, repositories and the AI assistants inside them

A classic process tool gives you a canvas, a notation and a place to keep the result: a repository with versions, approvals and publishing. The process gets in by drawing, by importing a file, and increasingly by describing it to an assistant. What the tools differ in is how much they do beyond the drawing: governance, simulation, mining, architecture. patchley is itself a vendor and does not belong to this category; it captures the process from the people who run it and hands over a BPMN 2.0 file.

Where in the lifecycle

What these tools cover, and what patchley covers

A process lifecycle in eight stages. The first bar is a general statement about the category; the second is patchley: from capture to the hand-over as files, with running shown as the Executions pilot, in preparation. The hand-over is a file, not an integration.

Where patchley fits

Upstream of the modelling tool, with a file hand-over

patchley is a vendor like the ones above, so read this part as its own description of itself. It sits before the modelling tool: the process is captured from a conversation, a meeting or a document, agreed as a BPMN 2.0 diagram with the people who run it, analysed per step, and then handed over as files.

What patchley doesTakes the process in from live audio in a workshop, typed text, one PDF or DOCX up to 50 MB with an optional focus, audio files (MP3, WAV), a BPMN file, or a Teams, Zoom, Webex or Google Meet call it joins as a visible participant. Produces a BPMN 2.0 diagram with pools and lanes, systems, documents and control steps; analyses per step; a PowerPoint deck.
What leaves patchleyThe diagram as BPMN 2.0 XML, SVG and PNG; the analyses as XLSX; the deck as PowerPoint. Any tool in the table that reads BPMN 2.0 XML can open the diagram; how much of the layout and the attributes it keeps is that tool's business.
What patchley does not doIt has no integration with any of these products: no connector, no synchronisation, no shared repository. The hand-over is a file. It is not a repository with publishing, approvals and governance across hundreds of models, and it is not an architecture tool.
When a suite is already the homeIf modelling, governance and process mining already live in one suite, such as SAP Signavio, the repository stays there; what patchley adds is the way a new process gets in, as a BPMN 2.0 file. Process mining on system data, which several suites offer, is a different source from the conversation; the interview vs. task mining page draws that line.
Where the overlap isMost tools in the table now generate a draft from text or a document as well. The difference is the source: patchley works from the conversation with the people who run the process, in the room or in the call, and the diagram is corrected while they talk.

When to use which

Different jobs, not better or worse

The useful question is which job is in front of you.

A modelling tool fits

You already govern hundreds of models

A repository with versions, approvals, publishing and architecture links is what these products are built for. If that repository exists, the question is only how new processes get into it.

patchley fits

The process is still in people's heads

Nothing to import yet: the knowledge sits with the team lead and the people who run the process. patchley captures it from the conversation and hands over a BPMN 2.0 file that the repository can take.

Both

Capture here, keep there

The usual combination: capture and analyse in patchley, export BPMN 2.0 XML, import into the repository. What survives the import depends on the receiving tool and should be tried out with one file first.

In one sentence

Classic tools are where models live; patchley is how a process gets out of the room and into a file they can read.
